A player who has not featured at all in the Premier League this season for Manchester United has had a one-year contract extension triggered, according to a report.
Midfielder Jesse Lingard has not played a single minute in the Champions League this term either.
However, Sky Sports reports that a clause in his contract has been triggered meaning he will now stay at Old Trafford until the summer of 2022.
Lingard has been linked with a move elsewhere in recent weeks, including league rivals Sheffield United.
Despite his contract extension, he could still temporarily leave the club next month.
The 27-year-old is unsurprisingly wanting more game time so a January exit could be likely.
According to Sky Sports, Lingard has had to self-isolate a number of times amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
“He’s been working hard in training,” United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said.
“He’s been unfortunate with having to isolate a few times, been in contact, or close contact with Covid, not even having it himself.
Nevertheless, the former first team regular will not be happy having to constantly watch on from the sidelines.
The England international has played a little less than 100 minutes for the club this season.
Both of the appearances he has made have come in the League Cup.
Man United mentality down to fringe stars, says Red Devils boss
United are enjoying a terrific nine-game unbeaten run and currently sit second in the Premier League table.
They are only three points behind leaders Liverpool who have played a game more.
Solskjaer credited his side’s recent from with the attitude of big name players who aren’t getting the minutes this season.
“You’ve got winners like Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic,” he indentified.
“They don’t play every single game but they are so influential in the group and the build-up to games and during games when they’re not playing.”
“I think everyone has realised they are privileged to be part of Man United, such a fantastic club with a fantastic history.”
Manchester United host Aston Villa on New Year’s Day, hoping to seal their tenth league win of the season.
A win would take them level on points with Liverpool but keep them in second on goal difference, barring a nine-goal swing.
