Rafa Benitez provides positive Everton January transfer window update & confirms Calvert-Lewin boost

Everton vs Brighton

Everton are back in Premier League action on Sunday the 2nd of January.

The Toffees are set to play host to Brighton in a 2 pm UK time kick-off.

Everton head into the game on an awful run of form which saw them began gameweek 21 of the Premier League season down in 15th place in the table.

Granted, Everton do have at least one game in hand on most of the sides above them, so they could still climb up to around 13th if they win said games. However, this should not take away from the fact that the Merseysiders need to seriously improve their recent form.

They will likely struggle to do so this weekend, however, as Graham Potter’s Brighton are currently proving one of the harder sides in the league to beat.

Only the current top three of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool, have fallen to defeat on less occasions in the Premier League than Brighton this term.

Rafa Benitez on January & Calvert-Lewin

Ahead of what is expected to be a tough test for Everton, Rafa Benitez spoke to the press on Friday.

When doing so, the Spaniard provided a Covid-19 update on his squad:

“Do you know any family in England Covid-free? We are getting better. Obviously we’ve had issues, players with problems are coming back and training. We cannot give names, in terms of Covid we have less problems.”

Rafa also spoke out on Everton’s attempts to sign someone in January:

“We are working hard. We are trying to find some targets to improve the team. Everybody knows how difficult January is. Everybody is a little bit worried about Covid, no-one wants to spend too much money. That is complicated.”

He added on the same subject:

“I am quite confident we will do two or three things.”

Finally, Benitez provided an update on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who looks to be on his way back from injury:

“Dominic is training with the team. One thing is match fitness, which you can improve playing games. Match fitness, we will see. Maybe he scores three goals in the first half and we don’t need to worry about his match fitness.”
